Ok so confession time: the list of movies and TV shows I have actually seen this year in comparison to what was nominated for a Golden Globe wasn’t even close, so my rights to an opinion on this year’s award’s ceremony is probably in severe contention. I mean, I did a downright deplorable job of going to the theatre this year and my ability to keep up with the year’s best television is even worse. I promise to do better in 2019!
Part of the issue for me is that the people I usually share my movie going experiences with. I mean let’s face it, I saw The Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Mary Poppins Returns…twice…because I have 3 nieces under the age of nine. I saw Black Panther because I thankfully have a loyal group or nerd friends who never forget to invite me to all things super and star wars. And I saw Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice because my mom was free and cool enough to let me drag her to them. (Side note: She was also perfectly willing to scope out A Star is Born and Green Book because she is in love with Sam Elliot and Mahershala Ali, but those will have to wait for the Red Box).
Shows in my house are even worse…My record for choosing award-winning T.V to binge is not stellar. It is all I can do to keep up with the few shows that I really love and those are all a few years old now!
I binge watched The Haunting of Hill House which was quite terrifying until the last episode. I also was very into American Gods, mostly because I loved Ian McShane so much in Deadwood that I will watch anything he does forever more. I finally gave up on The Blacklist this year. James Spader rules but I just couldn’t keep up anymore. I did a few more, The Alienist, Picasso, Walking Dead of course, Fear the Walking Dead as well, I tried season 2 of Legion but I feel like I am not smart enough for it, Gifted, season 2 of Handmaid’s Tale and Westworld. Binged all 4 seasons of Gotham, started Castle Rock and I promise to finish it, but there is only so much time in a week. Homecoming is on my list and I keep trying to start Black Mirror. House of Cards was a bust (sorry, but minus Kevin Spacey I just don’t see the point) and mom and I are ready to try The Kominsky Method.
As for the comedies? I am loyal to Dan and the Connors currently. Blackish is still hands down the smartest show I have ever seen, and the Big Bang Theory rules. I don’t have time for anything else.
And that’s how I went into Sunday evening! Here are some highlights from the night…and a few things that perhaps didn’t go as well…
- Sandra and Andy are pretty adorable and Sandra Oh’s serious moment at the very end of their opening bit made me freeze. For just a second the audience thought she was about to make a joke, a few people nervously chuckled. But when they realized she meant it, they give her the applause she deserved.
- Actor series musical/comedy: BOOM! Michael Douglas wins right off the bat for Kominsky! I Love that he gave a shout out to his 102 year old dad too– I AM SPARTICUS!!
- Ben Whishaw who won Best Supporting for Limited TV series or movie is the same lovely man who plays grown up Michael in “Mary Poppins Returns.” Nice surprise to see him up there.
- Jamie Lee Curtis rules.
- Score: First Man….why? Ummmmm Mary Poppins hello???
- Best actress TV movie goes to Patricia Arquette who I love because she is not skinny. Is that wrong? She is not beautiful either and she never has been and that makes me admire the hell out of her.
- Lady Gaga’s dress is to die for and it matches her hair. She is fascinating.
- Sandra Oh!!!!!! Omg her parents are so cute. https://youtu.be/X07hPXVFOI4
- Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph are unreal. I can’t even.
- Actor: I thought Christian Bale would win, I think he should. (Secretly, I hoped Lin Manuel would take it,) But I do not get him at all!! WHAT IS IT WITH THE ACCENT???? Do the people in the audience actually like this man?? I mean the audience is laughing along with him so I guess so! But man, he is a weird guy!
- Actor in a TV movie: Darren Criss…the kid from Glee?!?! Adorable. I mean I was rooting for my darling Antonio Banderas who destroyed as Picasso. But I am happy for little Darren.
- Cecille B. DeMille: I feel like when you get the Cecille B. DeMille award they should show the bad movies you did. Like, Jeff Bridges does not want to see the 1970-something version of King Kong up there…
- Director: Does anyone else feel like there was an upset here? Was Alfonso supposed to win for Roma?? What is that?! 4 other movies to choose from…ones that we have all heard of and the Academy picks what????
- Animation: Get ready this one might take a minute…Into the Spider-verse beats out both Disney/Pixar flicks. There is simply no excuse for this. Who do I write to? What rally do I join, where do I sign the petition? Come on Academy!! Remember Shrek vs. Monster’s Inc.??!! We don’t make this mistake anymore!!! It is an animation category. If its Disney it wins. Disney invents the technology that everyone else uses. Pixar literally invents the tech to animate the hair for Sully in Monster’s Inc. Shrek is just a very funny, very sarcastic cartoon. Sorry. So listen up boys and girls!! I love Spiderman too! But I don’t care how cool Spidey’s movie is. It doesn’t matter. Incredibles has far superior animation. It wins. Follow the rules guys. Dumb. The night is over for me.
- Actress Musical Comedy: My friend Sara is obsessed with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She dressed as her for Halloween. I am inspired to watch it and I swear to Sara I will!!…..right after I watch The Kominsky Method! Sorry Sara, it beat Mrs. Maisel. Boohoo.
- I love love love it when the audience stands up for people. The looks on their faces, the awe and love and respect is so real, it makes me so happy. And it makes Dick Van Dyke happy too, he is having a grand time!
- Actress in a musical or comedy: Emily Blunt should win. Period. But nope! Olivia Colman, who is downright hilarious live onstage, wins for The Favourite. Maybe there just isn’t room in the world for two Mary Poppins’. I can live with that.
- Movie Musical/Comedy: Saw VICE and I liked it a lot. I am not really sure what I saw honestly. Is it a comedy? I think so? I laughed, although it was at times painful. Christian Bale was astounding. Ditto Sam Rockwell. Steve Carell and Amy Adams both brilliant. You have already read my review on Mary Poppins. I think it should win but I don’t think it will and I didn’t see anything on this list yet. The handful of other movies I saw this year don’t belong on this list (unless you count The Incredibles 2. I do, they don’t. Whatever. I’m still bitter about the Spider-verse thing.) But Green Book takes it! It’s on my long and growing longer every day list of movies to see.
- Movie Drama: I quite liked Bohemian Rhapsody and I’m glad it won. I do not quite understand why the reviews were so mediocre. Rami Malek was astounding and is my personal favorite to win. I was fascinated with his performance. That Live Aid performance was astounding. I still think its odd that this one isn’t in the Music/comedy category but whatever.
- Early in the night there was a new award given out for the Golden Globes named after one of my favorite entertainers on the planet Carol Burnett. I guess a show that gives 50% of its awards to TV shows finally figured it should honor someone with some serious TV cred. The fact that they decided it should be a female is doubly exciting and about damned time! I fell in love with Carol in Annie in 1982, way after she became famous on T.V. but I am so thankful she is still around and that everything she ever did is still preserved for all of us to see. In her speech she mentioned how the expense of doing a show like hers now a days would prevent it from ever being done again, and I thought about how sad that was but how very very true. We have about priced ourselves right out of everything haven’t we? I can’t take my nieces and nephews to all of the broadway shows I want to, even the ones that travel to Syracuse now are way way out of my reach monetarily. https://youtu.be/f7kXIyxr4N8
Hopefully that doesn’t ever happen with the movies…https://youtu.be/udAFxOXO8Ug
