I’m five minutes in to Space force and I’m laughing so hard I’m crying. I don’t know if its just the sheer delight of seeing Steve Carrell in uniform going toe to toe with John Malkovich, or at a round table full of other favorites including Jane Lynch and Patrick Warburton (voice of Kronk!) all playing military architypes straight out of a Spinal Tap mockumentary, or if its the every single silly obvious tweet filled reference to Donald Trump – but for 2 short episodes I laughed harder than I have at anything for three months.
To be fair, my TV binging choices have been rather dark. I’ve been avoiding movies altogether. I want to binge and do it fast, so I am going for shows that only has a few seasons to it. 2 or 3 tops! And I lean towards the more realistic serial killer stuff- Mindhunter, The Stranger, The Sinner, Unbelievable, Broadchurch. I caught some sci-fi with Devs and Westworld. The ONLY comedy I went for was Never Have I ever, Mindy Kaling’s adorable coming of age “hope to have sex in high school’ story. After which, I went directly back to the dark side with Little Big Lies. I was just finishing off Dead to Me when Space Force came out.
It’s getting panned by the way. By everyone.
But I didn’t know that when I saw the first two episodes.
And don’t get me wrong, the larger plot points? Stupid. I don’t care about the teenage daughter and her high school angst. I don’t care about the entire Apollo 13-esque plot line with the monkey. And why is his wife in jail??
All weird.
It’s the little bits throughout the show that had me snickering. Small things every 30 seconds or so that reminded me of every day life. I mean THE second that Fred Willard showed up on screen as Steve’s dad I gasped. I laughed and cried at the same time! There is just this whole ridiculous bit with him on the phone, and he is not listening the his son and he has lost his wife and the caretaker is running around trying to help, and he puts the caretaker on the phone to say hello…
Ok its stupid…this would NEVER happen to a 4 star general. But it WOULD happen to one of us. Actually, I think I have been the caretaker. That’s why its funny. Its funny because Things that happen every day to all of us are happening to a 4 star general at the same time that he is dealing with the twitter account wailings of YOU-KNOW-WHO. I mean….what if that is how it really is for everyone in the White House….
Maybe I’ve been in too long. Maybe I’ve watched to many serial killer shows. Maybe I’ve stopped being a snob and I’ve lost my edge. No matter. I laughed. I couldn’t help it. AND, if nothing else, the very name of the show keeps Trump from getting his way for once…
…and THAT is a win. I’ll support Space Force just for that!
