Was anyone still watching Smash? (Admit it, you were – guilty pleasure for some, utter train wreck for others, but we kept watching right?) I know the series finale was a week ago and I actually don’t have all that much to say about it except for this: ….in both seasons the production numbers were amazing and far and away more superior to Glee’s. In fact I will admit to fast forwarding through much of Glee this last couple of years. At this point I mostly tune in to watch Sue Sylvester blow her sarcastic way through the show and any moment that Becky shows up just makes my night.
But when we are talking about the musical aspects of the show, Smash’s productions numbers were way more interesting and exciting. The choreography is especially better. While Glee spends most of its time playing camera tricks so that we never really watch anything more than the kids changing places on stage and walking around with power in their step, Smash actually gives me some serious dancing to get excited about.

So most of what I like about Smash, whether it’s the first spotty season or the second, less watched but somewhat better one is the choreography. And with the exception being that weird Bolly-wood number of course – I haven’t been too disappointed.
But I gotta be honest; the choreography for the new show “Hit List” is not great. I mean the patterns and staging is gorgeous. The way that the story unfolds for “Hit List” through the movement is intricate and pretty. But other then the occasional back-flip, the actual choreography, the parts where the kids are actually dancing together – seems like second rate hip hop backup dancing.
Not that I am an expert in this style cause lets face it, I am a little white girl who tends to point her toes during her weekly Zumba class. And I am always far better at the Latin part of the class than the hip hop part where the only reason I am even familiar with the music is cause I go to Zumba in the first place and not cause I listen to the radio.
But I still maintain that “Hit List” had bad choreo and it got worse towards the end. I do not believe that the same guy that choreographed Bombshell would have come up with the second rate weirdness that permeated “Hit List”.
My favorite choreography was the stuff that happened early on in “Bombshell”…especially the baseball number. That was fun and interesting; the kind of stuff I wish I had come up with for any number of shows I have done. So…Smash is over, which is probably a good thing but I will miss that golden opportunity it gave me to rip off some dance moves.
